When you think of animal crackers, you probably picture the iconic red box with the circus animals. That red box belongs to Barnum’s Animal Crackers, which have been around for over 115 years.
But with the recent redesign, the boxes might not be exactly how you remember them. The new packaging will no longer depict the animals as caged or in a circus. Instead, they are shown in “a natural habitat,” as Kimberly Fontes, spokeswoman for Nabisco’s parent company, told CNN.
CNN explains, “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the self-described largest animal rights organization in the world, is taking credit for the new look, which maintains the classic lettering and red branding of the original boxes. It says the redesign was a result of discussions with the company.”

PETA says, “The new box for Barnum’s Animals perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates caging and chaining exotic animals for circus shows.” They continue by saying, “No living being exists simply to be a spectacle or to perform tricks for human entertainment, yet all circuses and traveling shows that use animals treat them as mere props, denying them everything that’s natural and important to them.”
The new boxes have already been distributed throughout the United States and are currently available in stores.
