A. I think it is always better to have him checked over to exclude major injuries. With regards to reducing the swelling, you can use an ice pack applied to the affected area. It does not need to be directly applied to the skin, you need to wrap the ice pack in a thin cloth or pillow case and apply it for a short period of time ( 5 minutes ) and then take it off. This can be done every hour to start with. Avoid leaving the dog with the ice pack for long periods of time as it can damage the skin, or he could start biting/eating the ice pack itself incurring in other problems.
