Ursodiol is a bile acid given to cats and dogs for the treatment and prevention of gallstones. It is also used in the treatment of chronic liver problems.
Ursodiol is not FDA approved for veterinary use, but it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe this medication. Give this medication with food, as this will increase absorption.
Ursodiol reduces the uptake of cholesterol, as well as the synthesis and production of cholesterol. This is thought to help dissolve gall stones, which is a pebble-like formation containing cholesterol.
Ursodiol also helps pets with chronic liver diseases by increasing the flow of bile acids, preventing the build-up of toxic bile acids.
Store Ursodiol in a tightly sealed container at room temperature.
Give the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give your pet two doses at once.
