General Description

Piroxicam is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the treatment of inflammation. It is typically prescribed to pets with joint disease, fevers, and minor aches. It is also effective in the treatment of cancer, especially bladder cancers.

How It Works

NSAIDs work by reducing the enzyme COX-2. COX-2 is involved in the formation of prostaglandins which cause swelling and inflammation. Reduction of these factors reduce the pain and inflammation your pet experiences.

It is difficult to inhibit COX-2 without also reducing another enzyme COX-1. The inhibition of COX-1 results in unwanted side effects, but Piroxicam cannot select between the two. There are NSAIDs available now that can reduce only COX-2 and they are considered more safe.
