A. Some dogs eat dirt out of habit/OCD behavior. This is called 'picca". This doesn't necessarily mean that their is anything wrong with your pet medically. However, other pets eat dirt because they have a nutritional deficiency. Make sure you are feeding a high quality dog food to help avoid this.
I would try to monitor your dogs behavior from now on and encourage not to do this unwanted behavior. Drawing his attention away from eating dirt and encouraging play works well for a lot of owners.
