A. Unfortunately your pet may need to go on prescription diet food for fast more accurate results. I have some personal favorites which include: Hill's Science diet metabolic (#1 choice) or Hill's R/D (2nd choice). They are formulated for weight loss with less calories in the food, and the metabolic diet goes so far as to cause weight loss and once your pet is an ideal weight it can be used for weight management as well. Both of these diets are prescription only diets.
The only over the counter diet that I can recommend for weight loss, with varied results, is the Hill's Low fat diet. Definitely not as effective as the other brands I mentioned however.
I have no research that shows that a diet that is grain free will cause weight loss in pets.
Also if your pets breath is bad I would highly recommend getting his teeth examined by a vet for potential dental problems that can be addressed.
