Q. We just have adopted a blue pit bull, I have noticed that her ear is very swollen and she scratches this ear a lot. What can I do to stop this?

A. If this is a bubble on the outer ear it is likely a hematoma which will require drainage and anti-inflammatories from your vet. If it is the actual ear canal which is thickened and irritated this may be due to chronic infection and/or irritation as from allergies and may require long term maintenance care. A full health check and ear exam would be recommended in order to diagnose and treat the problem and to advise on long term management options to reduce recurrence
