Sensitivities to food or topical products such as shampoo can most definitely affect the hair coat and the only way to investigate for this is to remove the products and monitor for improvement of signs as there are only a small number of effective allergy screens for dogs for environmental allergens such as dust mites and pollens, food screens are notoriously unreliable. Other common causes are demodectic mange, friction from bedding and if scabs are present also, superficial infections
