Q. My beta fish has a swollen cloudy eye! I've had him for about 5 months and he's in a medium sized bowl. I change his water a lot so whats happening?

A. It could be infection or injury. I'm assuming he's housed alone being a betta. Make sure there is nothing in the bowl that can cause injury. Use dechlorinated water or add a water conditioner such as Stress Coat when performing water changes. Monitor water chemistry and correct any imbalances promptly. Feed good quality foods to support a healthy immune system. Discuss using antibiotics in the bowl with an experienced aquarist before treating. A pinch of aquarium salt (NOT iodized salt) can also be beneficial in treating injury or infection.
