Q. My 38lb boxer has Demodex and vet gave prevention collar. Active ingredient is Amitraz. Can he be given anything for the itching?

A. In my experience, the Amitraz collar is not an effective treatment for demodex mange. Most mange treatments consist of several injections given over a period of time which kill the mites. I would consider seeking a second opinion if it were my dog. While demodex is not a contagious mite to your family or other dogs, it can continue to cause problems for your boxer and be very itchy and bothersome.
